Due to cgi, we're used to seeing surrealism around us all the time as the lines blur between reality and fantasy. Here's a case in point: clipmarks.com/clipmark/8FA406E6-FE12-48B7-9913-7A3C9C9DB5DF/Just a quick joke really, but it includes a lot of symbolism from the early surrealists. But does anyone notice? Oh, and the marvellous Mark Thomas is demonstrating about surrealism on Radio 4 tomorrow at 6.30pm.

Told you so! But the implicit question is - if surrealism is acceptable and normal, does it mean anything any more, and what does dada still have to fight for, but that's another question as dada has taken over the art world with its stress on shock value and making the viewers question themselves and their surroundings, which certainly seems to be the core of financially successful modern art. Your 30 second thought for the day.

...making the viewers question themselves and their surroundings, which certainly seems to be the core of financially successful modern art. Of course, that can also be at the core of financially unsuccessful modern art as well...

It certainly isn't as shocking to be surreal these days which makes it less surreal in a way, though reality hasn't altered any since the surrealist and dadaist movement started so things still are surreal.
If you think about it too much your brain starts to hurt.
You could say it did my brain in.

I'd have to disagree with you there - I think reality (and the way people see it) has changed enormously in the last 100 years. Shared unrealities only existed in the imgination and were transmitted through literature and paintings (with huge limitations that the surrealists were pushing against). WithTV and film, we now share our unrealities in a uniform state; everyone sees the same vision and can discuss them with a common framework. The lines between real and unreal have become blurred. Nowadays there are people for whom unrealities (soaps, 'reality' TV, that sort of thing)are more real than their personal lives. Sorry, but these are the sort of brain games I like.

I think it is surreal that Google Ads feels that ads for mailorder brides make a good match for this group. Presumably this is based on a superficial knowledge of "Look Out There's A Monster Coming"? "Do you do sports?" "Yes" "Do you write books?" "Yes" Has anyone seen that film he made where that woman takes a razor blade to her eyeballs? I can't remember what it's called but it's on youtube somewhere. Edit: Found it! Un Chien Andalou (a short clip of the eyeball bit): uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eU3QwnfSn2s
