Being a fan of Old Time Radio, I receive a daily e-mail digest of all things pertaining to the hobby. One of the members daily posts lengthy lists of birth and death dates of people of note in the history of radio and a mention of their contribution to the art. It's mostly comprised of folks who worked in US radio, but also extends to the history of British radio. Yesterday, being the fourteenth anniversary of Viv's death, I was very pleased to see the following included:
03-21-1943 - Vivian Stanshall - Shillingford, England - d. 3-5-1995 pop musician: "Viv Stanshall's Radio Flashes"
RIP, Ginger Geezer. You are not forgotten. Dot Dot Dot ...

Of all the things that Viv did, from the Bonzos, through Sir Henry at Rawlinson End and Tubular Bells, to Stinkfoot It's a bit odd that Radio Flashes was chosen as the bit to remember him by. Even for a purely radio site I would have thought that the Rawlinson pieces for John Peel would have been rather more famous.
And hopefully I wasn't the only one raising a few glasses in his memory last night. If you didn't, do so at once. Viv won't mind. Better late than never.

I absolutely agree Radio Flashes was not his best stuff - I was just surprised to see him included at all. The guy who compiles the lists simply notes one of possibly many radio-related accomplishments to justify adding a person to his list. At times he really stretches things - I believe he's included Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe, and Charles Dickens citing "many works adapted for radio." I'm just happy that Viv is being remembered in a wider circle than our Bonzo-dominated lives.

Yes anyone who was a serious Viv fan would have mentioned sir Henry it was the most famous radio series he did and is probably the only one that sells a lot of CD's and now DVD's.

It's time for Chrimbo pressies once again, and this year's a doozie! The nice person at weescoosa.blogspot.com/2009/12/vivian-stanshall.html has upped great Christmassy dumplings of Viv's recorded works to feed the ears of poor deprived people the world over. So toddle over and pick up possibly your best present this year. And maybe leave a Thank You for yon blogger for spreading so much good cheer. God bless you and all who sail in you.

Thanks very much for posting this! And please continue to pass on such valuable information. Those of us who don't live in Britain might never be aware of such programs otherwise. One question: at the end of this program the hostess says "You can hear a longer version of this program on Friday night at 11" I searched the website and found only the Tuesday December 22 edition. Are the longer versions not available through "listen again"? Trust you have all bees" yesterdayen aware of/heard the Radio 4 "Great Lives" yesterday: Listen again on www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00....vian_Stanshall/

Must have had a bit too much Xmas spirit when I wrote the original message! My apologies! The 11 o'clock one was exactly the same as the initial one, so I'm not sure why it said that! It is available until midnight on Thursday 1st January (again on the web it says 2099, but I'm fairly sure it means 2009!! Obviously "tired and emotional", the lot of us!) Here's link, again: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00pcklz/Great_Lives_Series_20_Vivian_Stanshall/Cheers. L

Yes, pretty interesting. Wouldn't it be something if the lot of them that are left would do a joint interview!? Now, just waiting for the year 3000 to fly in
