Just searched the forum for Alberto blah blah paranoias, not a mention. Surprising as, for me, they're the only band that have come close to the Bonzos in regards to parody and good musicianship. Few people seem to know of them where I live, make that nobody but me. Anybody see 'em? (Apart from YouTube). "Gonna cut me liver out and nail on your door".... punk rock at it's best

Not surprising, no N.American exposure. I had to stumble upon them by chancing on buying an album (Rock and Roll is Dead I think it was called over here, perhaps Snuff Rock everywhere else). Good Velvet Underground take off, gotta love the little jig the guitarist does over the "body". Kill & Gobbin' On Life, punk parodies. Snuffin' Like That & Snuffin' in a Babylon, punk and reggae stuff. Great lyrics , some suggestion it was Lost Trios rather than Los. I dunno, don't think I've still got the album to check that out.

I'm surprised I've never heard of these guys, either, because I'm a curious sort whose album collection is approaching 4000, and I seek out eclectic stuff. But I've never been a fan of punk (I confess the crowd I ran with thought punk was pretty stupid when it got big in the late 70s, although we did like some of the political lyrics).
I'll need to check their stuff out more to get an idea of what they're about. The punk parody seems to be a little too straight up to be taken as very funny. I can understand why people didn't get the joke: there doesn't seem to be much of a joke, really. I've seen or read about far more outrageous stage antics done in earnest that make this look tame, and much more extreme lyrics, but I have to remember to put these guys in context. They were doing this early on in the punk movement; perhaps before other bands had gotten so extreme as to make this look mild.
Anyway, thanks for the exposure. I'll definitely be looking for their stuff.

Yup, the vids don't show up, gone AWOL Here's the first one, "Anadin", a really good parody of Velvet Undergrounds' "Heroin". www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOguxGzNqdA&feature=relatedThe second is "Kill" and "Gobbin' on Life". More a Sex Pistols type of punk rock. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrQi66kxd-IThey have a 2cd set out called "Mandrax Sunset Variations" that appears to cover the early stuff quite well. There's also a 1996 release called "Radio Sweat" buy C.P. Lee and Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias, Lee was one of the frontmen, the tall guy I believe that does the Lou Reed vocals on Anadin.

The Snuff Rock EP was easy enough to find, and now I've found Mandrax Sunset Variations, haven't had a chance to listen yet.
UPDATE: Patches I'm sitting here at 2 a.m. listening to the Mandrax stuff and grinning like an idiot. This set really shows their range: reggae, country, everything -- and funny lyrics on nearly every track. There's even a right-on-target parody of Firesign Theater.
Jesus Wept is my new favorite song!

I'm pleased you found them and even more so that you appreciate the talent Yes, there's way more than just punk rock parodies isn't there? Early on I'd heard that Neil Innes was involved but now believe that not to be the case but it would've been logical enough for the Bonzos' to have done material like that. And your probably a Firesign Theatre fan IMHO the best non-musical comedy troupe there's ever been and fortunately for us they're still active!! I don't think I'm missing much of their work and still find myself giving the occasional listen to their late "60's albums as well as more current stuff. They seem to appear fairly often in the Pac NW, Seattle/Portland, but not up here in BC dammit! The Albertos' "Radio Sweat" album has quite a Firesign ring to it in between tracks.

I found Mandrax on Soulseek, and after hearing about half went looking for it online. Snapped up a copy on ebay this morning for $12 US plus shipping from England, pretty reasonable. I'll be looking for anything else I can find by them. In particular, I read on a Yes tour history site that the Albertos opened for Yes and did a decent parody of Close to the Edge, only theirs was "Close to the Bar." I doubt it's on any recording but would have been fun to hear.
Yeah, I'm a Firesign fan from way back, up till a few years ago could still recite Nick Danger in entirety, and that's the skit that the Albertos parody, so it was easy to spot. My twisted sense of humor results largely from late 60s/early 70s exposure to Bonzo Dog, Monty Python, Firesign Theater, National Lampoon, The Fugs, and Frank Zappa, all from about age 10 on, thanks to my big brother.

homepage.ntlworld.com/cp.lee/albertos.html four cuts from "Radio Sweat" plus some history of the Albertos' (the Police opened for them!!). The Read John Hall's memories! link will be of interest to you, Flagellant. C.P. Lee seems like quite the character, I found this on YouTube , brilliant even though it's so catchy. Our Brit friends will know about Tom Watts who does the vocals, Lee is involved apparently. I think we're all Bozos' on this board!!

I went to the CP Lee site, dl'd the songs, read the lit, interesting stuff. They weren't just parodying punk, I see, they were targeting specific bands, which is why some of it is lost on me (never listened to the Damned).
Good stuff, thanks again.

You're most welcome I'm stunned nobody on the board has any anecdotes etc about this band. I think that lyrically they're the closest thing to the Bonzos' style that's yet happened.
