I've noticed there are many members who have never even posted a single post, do you think I should delete these members or leave them to give them a chance to post?
I could email them all warning about their impending deletion soon if they don't post to be fair, or just delete them.
Please vote and post your thoughts as I'd like to know what you think.

In the interests of global harmony I think that you should e-mail them to let them know about thier impending banishment. Lets face it if you hadn't e-mailed me I would have spent even longer in Farnfest world and may never had made it back here So I reckon they deserve a chance

I did email all the members just before Christmas most of them probably ended up in spam folders, I could try private messaging them all then give them a week to make 1 post, but this would depend on them logging into get it.

Meh, some people just log on to look. I say leave 'em, it makes it look like the board has lots of members HEHE.

It does make the board look better it would take quite a chunk out of the amount of members we have judging by what I read on the members list last night.
I just think it's a bit misleading and I'd rather just have active members, even if they only introduce themselves then read the board. I'm only talking about the people who have never even posted once.
I could check if they've ever logged in after the day they signed up before I delete them to judge whether they read the board or not.

I would rather we got some feedback if possible from the never posted to find out why and as for the ones who have disappeared it could be lack of internet access. Unfortunately it's a fact of internet life that people join a group/forum and then never post. and I agree with Kattsay it does make the Board look like it has a lot of members. I can't understand why they don't post, what is the point of joining if you don't post every group I've joined I've tried to post as regularly as I could to keep the group going. The only exception have been groups where I decided I didn't like the people much and even with those groups I did post for a while.

With a board like this I can understand some people might just come to read, but I hoped to see more posting from Bonzo's fans I must say. You'd think that because they were a university band they would have hordes of arty creative followers who have been looking for some creative outlet for their love of the Bonzo's. But sadly I was wrong there's just a few dedicated ones who come to post regularly. I think the problem is most Bonzo's fans don't know anything about the internet or want to post on a message board, it's the wrong media for them really. I'm glad for the members we do have however and would like to keep them, we just need to motivate them to post more. I'll try emailing the inactive members and see if I get any response this time.

I've just PM'd all users, that way anyone who logs in regularly but doesn't post has a fair chance of saving there account. I'll leave it till next Friday before the great deletion.

Another thought I can see when the last log in date of everyone was, so before I delete people I'll check whether they have logged in recently, like I say I've nothing against people who just don't want to post and want to just read the board.

Can I add my two ha'penny worth? I know you will be feeling a bit disillusioned because your site is quiet at the moment but it is a very specialised site and won't get better by deleting any inactive accounts - only by hard work and providing the lazy bastards with entertainment on a plate! I deleted all the inactive users after a month of my own site being up and running and it was a bit embarrassing having a drastically reduced membership. Luckily those that remained had the strength to get stuck in and see us through til the numbers picked up again but there is a serious danger that, if you only end up with say 10 users, those that remain will think 'what's the point?' and you end up with none! You are not alone in having a large proportion of inactive members - every site has the same problem (even the message boards with large numbers of members wouldn't risk doing a 'member recount' as they know they only have a small number of regular posters and the illusion of a large and thriving membership is all important). I would instead encourage you to widen the scope for the existing members by adding caption competitons (you could use bonzo or python pics), 'funny old world' stories, maybe even a bonzo or python crossword if you can make one up or find one from somewhere. Additionally, Nancy, you can go to the site we use on stoats for the daily trivia quiz Here, you can either start a daily automated python quiz for your members (they have a huge bank of python questions) or pick up some questions from the question bank and post them here. Go have a look at other sites and see what ideas you can nick/adapt for here - there are plenty of choices and sod any copywrite/etiquette issues - every idea has been nicked from somewhere else! For my part, I do not feel that I am able to contribute anything worthwhile as I know nothing about the BDDDB but I might feel confident enough to enter a competition such as captions or daily quiz until I get my feet under the table. Others may feel similarly intimidated - the 'clique' effect is evident even on generalist sites, never mind specialist ones, and that does put people off posting, so you need to encourage them not just to come but to stick around and get involved. Good Luck and I hope the hard work and enthusiasm of Nancy and others gets rewarded!

We do have a song word game going, but only people who know a lot of the Bonzo's lyrics could take part in that, exploiting the bands Monty Python connection is an option, as everyone is familiar with their work to some extent.
we do have some daily things you can do in the dad'ism section, I'll try pinning those threads to encourage people as well.

That fun trivia site looks good, I'll have to try making a Bonzos quiz up, and there must already be Python one somewhere.

Hmm I've just read what stoatprof had to say about a specialised site, and if its any consolation this ones doing much better than than my Farnfest one. We have a few dedicated souls who post but according to my web stats most people seem happy just to look at it. tbh I think things like myspace have alot to answer for. There was a time when things like php, nuke etc were the in thing now i think its the flashy, customise it yourself and add all sorts of people sites that are all the rage. That said there aint nowt wrong with whats going on here and you are doing a fine job Nancy. Keep it up As for removing inactive members I have thought about doing the same on mine recently but have decided against it. I think the prof is right it is important to have the "illusion" of a thriving community. Its your choice of course at the end of the day but it may be worth having a rethink

I am starting to get response from some of the inactive members, so it might have worked anyway and I won't have to delete people after all. I have started a Monty Python quiz (or at least linked to one) in the outside the Bonzo's section under "Quest For The Holy Grail".

No, no! Don't delete the people who haven't posted anything! I just joined today and if I were to be deleted, well I'd have to register agin, and that weird box with the letters & numbers hurts my brain.
