don't get me wrong. i idolise this dead man. i find myself chuckling sir henry quotes every day of my life But we aren't all perfect. Viv did have some bad racist moments. But was it more Alf Garnett, as in "look at how awful this man is" ? - esp on Sir Henry albums. I noticed that the Bonzo's didnt do "dear dear dear etc " in an Indian accent at the reunion Times have changed for the better. I do feel bad about all this. But there were many more things about him. What do others think?

lots of people were put off "Sir Henry at Niddidis Cral" because it was seemingly so racist, but I think it was like the Alf Garnet as you suggested. He was mocking a class of British people who probably really do talk like that.

I wouldn't be so sure of that, there are plenty of racists about nowadays. Trouble with political correctness is that people keep their hatred festering under the surface and appear to be all sweetness and light on the surface. There are more racist assaults and murders today then there were in the 70's. Sorry to be grim but its a fact. Oh what a sad world we live in

I think Sir Henry is menat to be from colonial times when British people felt really self important and superior. It's the Bonzo's work that seems racist sometimes, with the "Dear Dear Dear No" on "Hunting Tigers", and on tuba's in the "Moon Light." If the band had formed today they would never have written those songs I imagine.

he played with african musicians on "umbrellas" - this is no great moment of political clarity by sir viv.....he probably just couldn't give a toss what he said ever! in the same vein, he didn't care who he hung around with. he was different after all.
good replies here guys, sorry to drag the whole bag down, man. i'll think of something really witty and original like everyone else next time.......

Trouble with political correctness is that people keep their hatred festering under the surface and appear to be all sweetness and light on the surface. No, the problem with political correctness is that it has gone waaay too far and even innocuous sayings are miscontrued as attacks. One should be able to say that an issue is "black & white" without fear that he'll be accused of being racist. Now, blatant racist statements are rightly to be condemned but there comes a point where PC can chill free speech.

I had a think about this and when the songs were written, it was a different time and I don't think the Bonzos regarded the songs as rascist, as they were inspired from an earlier era. Hunting tigers out in Indiah and Ali Baba's camel just wouldn't sound the same without the accents in them imho. That doesn't mean I think it's right to ridicule another race, I love both of those songs and do worry about if I should like them

"Tuba's in the moonlight" is worse, have another listen to it. I don't particularly like any of those songs, not only because of the racism, but because I don't like the style and they don't make me laugh like the other ones do.
And of course you do have to remember they were written When this sort of stuff was an acceptable joke and not not so shocking.

If anybody reads any racism into this I suggest they dont read it, as a fully paid up scotsman I take no offence at all to any scottish accent references and there are many that Vivian does, the Dear Dear Dear aspect of Hunting Tigers can never be construed as being racist!

And as for the Indian accents on Hunting Tigers not being used at the reunion tour, they also didn't use them when they performed it on DNAYS so go figure!

Neither do I being a fully paid up Scotswoman but the accents can be construed as rascist and I have no doubt if Ali Baba's camel was released today there would be an outcry.

Ahh the joys of PC Its interesting to note the stances taken by people here, I can only assume that those of us who are not overly bothered by accents etc etc are a wee bit older than those that are. IMO Dear Dear Dear No is actually quite amusing, but there again I have not been brainwashed by what is basicly and american idea forced upon us by some bleeding heart liberal politicians in this country. I am not a racist, I have many good friends of different creeds and colours and we all get along fine and most of them laugh at the absurdity of PC. My final word on this is Think for yourselves, and don't allow yourselves to be told what to do, how to think and speak by a system that should be running our country not our lives We all know what is right in our hearts so follow yours .
