I have heard references to "Odd Boy" a few times since I got into all this Bonzo and Neil Innes adventure. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

It's a Bonzo song called 'Sport (the odd boy)' from the Keynsham album - it's basically about not partcipating in PE!

When I used to request a sick note from my mum, so I could skive from P.E. My mum used to say "Arh so you want a Melly Maynard (Mrs)". Melly Maynard "Mrs" was the odd boy's mother. I hated sport at school, does that make me odd?

Yes, davros, clearly you are odd -- the song clearly states it's an odd boy who doesn't like sport! Also, you apparently are not equipped for society, not are you a jolly good sort. I think this was also the song that solidified Stephen Fry's interest in the Bonzos - the boy in the note is named Stephen! I have a bootleg version of this song done as a jazz song, without the harpsichord. Odd! (I thought it was Nelly Maynard). Rocky: try this link

Hey, I think it's Nelly Maynard as well - but as English is not my first language, I don't hold my breath!
That makes two of us, davros - I also hated sport at school, so this means I'm an odd girl I guess...
Still haven't resolved the shower debate though: is it a nice cold shower or an ice cold shower?

Hey, I think it's Nelly Maynard as well - Still haven't resolved the shower debate though: is it a nice cold shower or an ice cold shower? Melly and nice is what I always heard. For what that's worth. I was always one of the tallest kids in school. Drove them crazy that I wasn't interested in basketball--or any other sports. Only game I ever enjoyed was volleyball on the nude beach in California. Not exactly a highly competitive situation.

It is Nelly Maynard you heard right, not sure what Nelly is short for but I think it's Vanessa, common name of that era for women.

And Elizabeth.

Surely that would be Betty, my boy. Or Lizzie, Eliza, Beth, Lisbet or Liza. Where do you get Nelly from that?

From my Victorian youth. Elizabeth -> Ellie -> Nelly
Or so I thought...
A wee bit of research brought up these:
Medieval pet form of ELEANOR or HELEN
The girl's name Nellie \n(el)-lie\ is a variant of Cornelia, Helen and Nelly.
An abbreviated form of Eleanor, Helen, or Cornelia.
The name came to be used particularly of someone of low birth and limited capabilities. For example, Nellie was a fairly common generic name for a lowly servant, a skivvy. Someone new in a factory or office would often have been instructed through sitting by Nellie, or in other words learning by watching some conscientious and not too clever person who knew the ropes but who could be relied upon not to inculcate bad habits. The word also became a slang term for an effeminate male or homosexual, and in the US gave rise to the derogatory term nice-nellyism, “prudery; genteelism; excessive prudishness of speech or behaviour”.
Yet again I'm proved wrong. Hoorah!

I believe Nelly/Nellie/Ellie is also an affectionate term for an Elephant. However, I have never come across a girl named Elephant. Well not to my knowledge, despite some having big ears. Would I dare call her such? Not on your Nelly!

So where is that Rocky then? She started this and I want to hear what she thinks of the song. It is one of my very favourites.

And I'll never know what anybody else apart from gwood thinks about the shower. Please people, I really need to know whether it's a nice cold shower or an ice cold shower. Always thought it was a nice cold shower until a friend heard the song and thought it was an ice cold shower. Now this is an ongoing debate between us. Help!!!!!!!!!!

Although almost identical and using exactly the same letters in exactly the same order, there is a subtle difference. I believe having a nice cold shower is a refreshing way of cooling off after over-exertion or a hot day. Having an ice cold shower is more of a punishment or a means of cooling ones ardour. I think it is a nice cold shower
