But you do admit that Kong must have been a great bloke?
King Kong was one of the most influential characters of my life. When we first met, back when he was obsessed with that hysterical trollop Fay Wray, it was obvious to me that he was a misunderstood genius, harassed by the unwashed multitudes. I couldn't understand why they couldn't just leave him alone. At the time, I was enrolled in Catholic school, where they were trying to indoctrinate me into a cult that worships another oddball outsider, but this one had a father who could do anything--destroy the world, kill everybody, whatever he wanted. I rejected this belief, but retained a strong fondness for Kong.
I was disappointed by some usurping pretender's antics with a faux-Godzilla and the like, although I found the story of his son very touching. It confirmed the feelings I had for the old man.
Later, when Kong returned in the 70's, leaping from one World Trade Center tower to the next, I knew he was the hero I always hoped for, and this time, even the stars of the tale were with me.
When he made is triumphant return a few years ago, I was ecstatic! Here was Kong as he was meant to be. It was so good to see my old friend again! Now it was obvious that were were dealing with a misunderstood soul persecuted by an uncaring, self-absorbed, power-hungry, manipulative power structure.
Kong is my friend, mentor, and hero. There is no king but Kong. Long live Kong! A Great Bloke indeed.
