Just listening to this band on Radio 2 and thought we should have discussion about them on here since their name is a Bonzo's song title. Their music doesn't sound very bonzo's inspired and it's quite an obscure song for them to have named their band after as it is an album track (as far as I know) so they must be fans of the Bonzo's or perhaps had parents who were to have heard it. Or maybe they are Beatles fans and have seen Magical Mystery tour, I've just added them on Myspace so maybe they'll come and tell us? Apparently their album is the number one album in America at the moment, here's one of the songs from it "I Will Possess Your Soul"

I'm going to be shot down for this but I am so turned off by this band stealing Death Cab For Cutie as their name. I've seen them on tv performing and I do not like their sound. Like Hootie and The Bowfish they took a catchy name that get's attention......I have yet to hear them credit the Bonzo Dog Band......if no one asked them they would have us go on and believe they came up with the name on their own........just my opinion......they are undeserving to call themselves Death Cab For Cutie, it's a complete rip-off. this board has too many strict rules...so now do I get kicked off? I belong to Innesboard and am free to speak over there. p.s. I'm a girl and take offense to being labeled oddboy

I'm not really a fan of theirs this is actually the first song of theirs I've heard to be honest, they should credit the band for the song they named their band after. I can't understand why they used the name to be honest they don't sound anything like the Bonzo's, not even vaguely inspired by them. The rules were only created because we had some trolls join and cause trouble you can say what you want really within reason, the Odd Boy thing is just your rank it changes the more you post

Surely by being a girl, you are indeed an oddboy by default. Nice music, Nancy, but I was forever waiting for the singing to start. Maybe they aren't up to the la stage yet.

That's what I thought, and it's kind of an anti-climax when he starts isn't it? Still can't work out why they used the name, their myspace profile doesn't give any clues.

In an article in The Times it just says it was a song the Bonzos played in the Magical Mystery tour film. They probably just liked the name and I don't think it goes beyond that.
I haven't heard them as I read they didn't sound anything like the Bonzos so just ignored them.
I'm a bit upset that Chass thinks we are too strict, which we aren't, it's only if someone is being abusive to others that we have a problem with.
Everyone is free to speak here.

chass, no need to be so touchy.
Regarding the band Death Cab for Cutie, I first heard them back in 2001. I'm an American in my late 40s, but the majority of music I listen to is new indie/college rock and pop. So I know the genre Death Cab resides in, and I've always found them terribly underwhelming. But that's typical for the American commercial scene, the blandest stuff often sells the most (see John Mayer, etc).
I also find it somewhat of an affront that they appropriated the Death Cab title for their band name. They're probably a decent bunch of guys who enjoy what Bonzo Dog they've heard, but as others here have said, their music has absolutely nothing to do with the Bonzos, so what was the point of naming themselves that? I've made it a point over the past year or so of their mainstream success to inform kids I meet of the REAL Death Cab, the song. I play it for them, or upload/email it, and they invariably don't know what to think.
I hope and expect that eventually a few young people will find their way to Viv and the Bonzos through the Death Cab band's name, but overall, if their intent was to honor the Bonzos, they'd have given the Bonzos more exposure by maybe covering some Bonzo tunes -- which of course they won't do because their music has nothing to do with the Bonzos' music, and covers of Bonzo tunes are of course never going to get airplay on U.S. radio.

A little more. Death Cab the band got known through their songs getting a lot of exposure on the tv series The O.C. back in 2003 or 2004. "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" is the single that got them really huge, IIRC. I found it to be a smarmy, unremarkable, acoustic ballad, which of course explains why it was so popular. The kind of sappy song guys write to get laid. Youtube link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfBw0IWwO5U

"Sport (The Odd Boy)" is a song by the Bonzo Dog band from the album "Keynsham" most people find it funny that the first rank we have here is Odd Boy, I don't understand how you can possibly find it offensive. And if you want your account deleted do it yourself it's not difficult, I think you'll find this and the Innes Board are the only 2 really active sites discussing the Bonzo's, though bonzodog.co.uk has its own forums.

I agree, I wonder if they even realise that the Band were a real band and not just made up for the Beatles film. The day I started this thread their album was number 1 in the American album charts I assume it still is so there must be something in their sound we are missing or just don't get as like you I find them quite underwhelming.

hey nancy fancy pants.....................I am not a boy never was and never will be so you better take the ranking away. I love The Bonzo Dog Band and you can never take that away from me. If you can't give me a more suitable name for a ranking then take your website and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. got that?!!!

You can't take the ranking away it changes when you've made 20 posts, it's the same for everyone joins it's not personally directed at you it's been that way since I started the board.

I would have thought that having a sense of humour was a gimme if you are a Bonzo fan, evidently not!
In praise of not being a boy and all that is wonderful (or not) about the female form, here is a song dedicated to all those to whom it may apply:
