Mad, mad modern music « Thread Started on Mar 28, 2009, 1:26pm »
In parts of England (well, only the North-East as far as I can tell) there is a new dance craze known as Scouse House. It's a sort of lowest common denominator House style that lacks any style at all and is as tedious as tepid toast. The beginning of the style and the coiner of its catchphrase "Put a bangin' donk on it!" was Blackout Crew's 'Put A Donk On It'. I doubt anyone here can listen to more than a minute of it before having to give up to retain their sanity.
However... You can, and people now have, put a donk on just about any track to make it sound like a Scouse House track. Yes you can. Because there's a site (donkdj.com) which allows you to upload any track and it will put a bangin' donk on it, which you can then download. And why would you want to do that? Because instead of working out the bpm of the track and adding a donk at the same beat it works the other way round - it has a donk track that it speeds the original track up to match. It creates insane gibberish/chipmunk garbage that, as often as not, is hilarious!

Hey mate, crazy stuff. You were right, I couldn't listen to much of the original, and the others didn't stream, so I didn't. But what a concept--rebrand a familiar-sounding effect with a catchy name, start a craze. Somebody's raking it in. I guess for now I'll refrain from putting a donk on my own stuff, just got a new digital recorder, didn't see a donk button. Is this thing obsolete already?

The others don't stream, but need to be downloaded. I would recommend downloading at least the Monster Mash, because all of the 'donked' tracks are better than the original. To me it's fairly emblematic of the direction of new technology - you can now turn classics into dross with just one click of a button.
As for it being obsolete, it looks like it. The first single (the one linked) sold well locally, but the follow-up looks to be dying a death even in its home base. Thankfully.

I gave it a try, found it interesting but annoying! Still, I was intrigued enough to 'donk' Peter Gunn by P. Paul Fenech, and instrumental. Results were quite good, I liked the somewhat sped up guitar but the beat is distracting! So I redid it, trying to leave out some of the beat and it works better. I think chipmunk style of vocals would quickly become irritating which is why I chose an instrumental.

I think the original is a bit sarcastic and trying to point out how easy it is to create a techno hit which I found quite funny, but yes it is very annoying. And Monster Mash with a donk is possibly the most annoying thing I've ever had, I can actually feel my sanity ebbing away as I listen to it...

The version of money is funny too the software obviously can't cope with the unusual time signature.
And the version of O Superman works surprisingly well, surprised no one has released it commercially with a video of practically naked women dancing around a guy in a superman costume and made millions yet.
My armpits smell, my breath is bad, I look like hell, I feel so sad...

That is the big problem of the site. I did hear a rumour of a list, but I haven't been able to find one. And by now I'd be amazed if there is a human being who could listen to them all to catalogue them without becoming violently psychotic.
